hello shree 280, i completely agree with Yvette; i've also read that menopause starts after 12 months of no period. but sadly, your hot flashes and nightsweats may last for some time.
"The natural end of every woman’s reproductive life is menopause. The standard treatment for menopause used to be hormone replacement therapy (HRT); however, many women and healthcare providers are no longer routinely asking for or prescribing traditional estrogen replacement therapy because we now know that traditional HRT using synthetic progestins and estrogen increases the risk of heart disease and breast cancer.
To treat the symptoms of menopause including night sweats, mood swings and hot flashes, women are turning to natural alternative treatments. Your symptoms of menopause may be relieved if you try the following tips:"
here is the link to this article if you're interested about non-medical treatments for your hot flashes. my mother and aunt are going through the same thing and they started exercising and following a healthy diet.

Hot flashes and night sweats sure aren't fun--I know!
The official time of menopause, from what I understand, is when you haven't had a period for 12 months. So it sounds like you are at or near that point--about to enter the "post-menopausal" phase of life.
Some post-menopausal women still get hot flashes and night sweats; this can go on for weeks/months/ and less commonly, for years. I personally have never heard of anyone this has happened to, but this is what my doctor has told me. I do not think it is common that it goes on for years--I think more like weeks or months. I was upset when I heard this and sure hope mine go away at or near the 12-month of no period point!
Today I had a MAJOR hot flash at the baseball game. My husband got a kick out of it and finally fully appreciated what I've been saying and trying to describe...
Good luck,
Yvette
