one ovary, close to menopause

I just turned 50. Had a hysterectomy 3yrs ago for large fibroid and kept one ovary which now seems to be going downhill. In the last 3-4months I have felt menopausal. My ovary has recurring cysts- normal stuff, but I am tired of these painful cysts forming, so I am opting to have the other ovary removed. That will put me in immediate menopause, if I'm not already. I DON"T WANT TO GO ON HRT. Has anyone, ANYONE had their ovaries removed and not gone on HRT? I ask the doc if I must go on HRT and she just laughs. I am wondering how I will feel when I wake up from surgery. From the way they talk I will have grown 2 heads and look like a troll or something because I don't have estrogen. I can not get an answer from anyone about why I MUST take HRT. Don't the menopausal symptoms go away eventually?
