Polyps are are buildup of the lining tissue of the uterus into a small fleshy mass. They usually are oval and have a stalk and are a common cause of bleeding. Polyps can be as small as a sesame seed or larger than a grape. They are mostly benign.

Usually a doctor can tell if you have one by ordering an ultrasound of the uterus or looking inside the uterus with a small telescope called a hysteroscope. The hysteroscope can also be used to remove them, or the lining can be scraped at a minor operation called a D&C.
