uterine lining 14mm in menopause

by rhonda277, Jun 16, 2009 03:53PM
I am 55 years old. I had a vaginal ultrasound which showed my uterine lining to be 14mm. I have been in menopause now for about 4 years with no bleeding. The ultrasound was done along with a general abdominal ultrasound because of a weight gain that was fairly sudden. My doctor says we don't need to investigate the thick lining any further until I notice any bleeding. I am a bit worried though because it seems to me that 14mm is quite thick and my maternal grandmother died from uterine cancer. Should I insist on a biopsy or is it okay to leave it until I notice some bleeding?
Thanks in advance.

Rhonda, I'd request a biopsy just to put your mind at ease.  I'm sure that there's likely nothing serious going on but, you don't want to get to the point of bleeding and THEN, panicking.  If there is something to be concerned about, better to be safe and find it early.  Most likely, it's just proliferative changes OR...MORE LIKELY....uterine fibroids or polyps.

Our uterus isn't hollow like they show on diagrams.  They flatten and the sides press on one another.  That means that fibroids and polyps (both benign for the most part and don't need treatment if they are causing no symptoms) can resemble endometrial tissues and show up as a thickened endometrium.

At 5 years post menopausal, any thickness greater than 4 or 5 mms is generally biopsied so, I'm not sure where your doc is going with this in "waiting until you bleed"????  It doesn't make sense to me but, then again, I'm not a doctor and he must have some reason.  Perhaps, you need to ask why he is NOT doing a biopsy and not seemingly concerned unless it bleeds.  Maybe, he knows this is from fibroids/polyps and hasn't told you that much????  That would make more sense than just saying to wait until/unless you bleed????

Let us know what you find out or write again. :)
