If there is an ovarian dermoid on your ovary and  your are 50, many doctors would take out the ovary along with the dermoid. It can be done now quite easily as a day surgery using laparoscopy. Dermoids are benign tumors that have many unusual parts in them such as hair, calcium and oil. They can make the ovary twist or cause other problems if they burst because the material in them is very irritating to the body. If you absolutely want to keep your ovary and just have the dermoid out, speak about this with your doctor. It is your ovary. However, as mentioned, what your doctor is suggesting would be a common suggestion. Talk with your doctor about whether or not you want to use hormone therapy after the ovary comes out so you won't get symptoms of menopause.
