your mother wants you to marry your neice?? wow i think that is not a good thing to do. how old are you? why would she ask this? i dont know actual statistics on having children but id say you have possiblities of birth defects from "same genes". are you living in the US? i wouldnt suggest it kinda creepy she is.

She is your cousin right?
It is perfectly legal for you to marry your cousin and it happens in many cultures. If you are happy to marry her then I don't see any reason why you shouldn't As for having children they  should be fine but you would be better to consult with a doctor to get a better answer to this question.

ok i got the cousin neice thing mixed up lol. im trying to leave my personal opinions out of this. id say most important right now is do you WANT to marry her? to each his own i guess. my cousins are like brothers to me and i suppose i just dont get it.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to marry your first cousin in some states.  However, I don't think this person is in the U.S.

I think you do have the potential for some genetic defects being that you're only first cousins, but I don't know for a fact.  Hopefully someone has some answers for you.

My personal opinion is to say NO WAY!! That it's just plain wrong but I will keep my personal opinion out of it and just tell you what you want to know.

My Husband's uncle and his cousin are married. They are first cousins. They share the same grandparents, their mothers are sisters. They have a daughter and there is NOTHING wrong with her. She is perfectly healthy and normal. In fact she has a daughter of her own.

well stinky ol dr phil did a story on this exact cousin thing. he said the outcome of a child born to cousins are not at a big risk. in america it just isnt accepted. so you may live somewhere else and it may be. does everyone hear that banjo??

Lets put a little science into the discussion.  If there is a family history of genetic birth defects/disorders somewhere in the past, then the chance of having children with the same disorder increases.  If there hasn't been any problems along family lines, then the children from this union should be ok, given the normal rate of occurance for any birth defect.

Some food for thought

Albert Einstein — was he intelligent enough for you? His parents were cousins, and he married his cousin. So did Charles Darwin and Queen Victoria. Worldwide, 20% of all married couples are cousins.

The risks of birth defects or mental retardation are 2 or 3% higher among married cousins, but other parental risk factors are higher. Age, for example, increases the risk much more: There's a 6 to 8% chance that a woman over 40 will give birth to a child with birth defects.
