Can someone tell me about this swelling?

Hello.  Recently I had surgery for a double hernia.  My doctor was going to do it laproscopically but it turned out that there was too much scar tissue from a previous hernia so he had to do it through my groin area on both sides.  I felt great right after surgery because the pain of the hernias was no longer there.  However two days later my scrotum was very swollen.  My scrotum was a little larger than both of my fists put together.  It is still swollen.  It is still very tender.  There is also actually swelling along the shaft of my penis  This shape has changed some.  My doctor said the swelling was normal and that it could last for up to six months.  He also said that with the amount of damage that I had from both hernias that I was lucky that the swelling was not more intense.  What can I do?  Is there anything I can do to decrease the pain of this swelling?  Part of the problem is that there is so much fluid rentention in my scrotum and penis that it is now pretty heavy.  Can you please offer any help?  Any assistance?  TMy doctor and his team were wonderful... I am just so uncomfortable with this swelling and it hurts at times to move because of the weight...  I have tried a variety of underwear but it does not do much good.  I look forward to your response.  Thank you.....
