No, no, NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
How barbaric!
I, too had ingrown toenails when in my early teens (now 58) with FREQUENT, PAINFUL, UN-NECESSARY, SADISTIC surgery!
It was only by chance that, at about 45, I discovered the SIMPLEST of solutions: Cut a V in the very center of the toenail, about an eighth (try for a quarter!) inch across the top and about a quarter inch down to the point of the V.
Overnight, no exageration, the swelling minimized to the point of mild irritation and, within a week, there was no, none, not ANY pain WHATSOEVER!
Please, for the sake of your son, please TRY this! There is NO down side: if it doesn't work nothing is lost.
If any other readers have had experience with this please chime in so as to relieve any trepidation felt by the Mom!
Good Luck!!
Jimm
P.S.
GAWD! If ONLY I knew THEN what I know NOW!!
