Pain on penis

I've recently developed a painful spot on my penis -- nothing visible at all.  It''s just a tiny spot that stings when anything contacts it (including, sadly, any part of my girlfriend).

I had shaved the area about a week before and my best guess is an ingrown hair of some kind -- but wouldn't there be *something* visible on the surface if it were an ingrown hair?  There's absolutely nothing and it's actuall difficult to even pinpoint the precise spot, as the skin is lose when flaccid.  It's a sharp stinging pain, almost like a splinter -- definitely disrrupts sexual activity.

Could this be an ingown hair or is it something more serious?  How long should I wait before consulting my doctor (I hae no insurance at the moment, so $$ is a concern)?

Also: is there a better way to remove hair from the shaft?

Thanks for the advice re the hair.  I guess I'll try one (once they've gorwn out long enough) and see if that's as outrageoulsy painful as it sounds ;)

The stinging is very irritating though.  It has been 6 days now, though it seems to have diminished in intensity.  Of course, I'm concerned soemthing's wrong, but I can just imagine going to the doctor and having her say, "Oh, yes, that's just Xyz -- nothing to worry about and will clear itself up ten minutes after you leave my offce.  That will be $10,000."

If it's lessened that's a good sign isn't it?  The waiting is driving me nuts, though.

I don't know what to tell you about the stinging, that sounds like it could be serious, I would see the doc, but as for the hair removal, I pluck. its a bit more painful, but it gets the job done and stays nicer longer, and I have never had any ingrown hairs from it or the stinging sensation, and no risk of painful cuts or razor burn.  and I noticed when i did shave, i got an acne like rash from doing it, just from irritation i believe, but plucking definitely is my preferred method. good luck figuring it all out.
