Sebaceous cyst

Sebaceous cyst

Hi, I have what a believe is a sebaceous cyst on my scrotum. I noticed a lump, similar to a pimple, under the skin. I popped it and squeezed all the contents out, which included a cheese-like material and plenty of oil. I should have probably left it instead of squeezing it because it has ruptured the skin on the surface and caused an open sore. I have been treating it with Betadine to ward off infection but I am wondering what the outlook is from here. Will it heal up as per normal or will it just return? Should it be removed by a doctor? Any advice would be great. Cheers.

If the cyst was infected, the infection itself may have killed the sebaceous gland in that follicle, which means that the cyst should heal. There's not enough info here to make an educated guess as to what could happen- you didn't tell about the diameter of the sore, pain, redness/swelling, and how big the raised area is.

My best suggestion, if you're not having any fever or pain or dischage/growing redness in the area, is to leave off with the betadine ASAP. Wash and keep the sore dry and clean- twice a day is fine, if you can keep it dry and clean. Let it try to heal on its' own for a few days- you can put an antibiotic ointment on it, so long as you don't keep the ointment on for more than 3 days maximum- the goal here is to let the area heal naturally.
If, after 5-7 days you see no changes, or it doesn't scab up, go to your doctor. Any fever, pain, increase in swelling/redness, or pus discharge, get immediate medical attention. Otherwise, keep it clean and dry, and leave it alone- do not pick at it any more!
