Skin irritation on penis?

About 6 days ago I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend before I had to drive 35 hours across the country for a road trip. About two days later I noticed redness on my penis shaft. At first it was just red, but then it started to look very irritated and maybe even a bit purple. There were never any sores or blisters and the part where it was the worst went away the next day. It still was a bit red. There was no pain, no discharge and no blisters. The only part I am worried about is that now there are scabs on my penis which makes me worry seeing that is one of the things that happens with herpes. What's weird too is that the scanning is mostly where the penis was just red and irritated as opposed to where it was really red and scary. If it were herpes and my first outbreak, wouldn't it be very painful with very  cLear blisters? I went to see urgent care on the day I noticed it and the guy said "I'm not sure if it's herpes, usually when I look at herpes I can emmediately see that it's herpes but with you I'm not sure" and I took a test. It's really bothering me and if anyone has any other explanations I would love to know.
