You have urethritis, probably nongonococcal (i.e., not gonorrhea).  It is sexually acquired and transmitted.  The proper action is for you to be examined, not your partner!  The most common causes of NGU don't show up on examination of women for STDs, which generally test only for gonorrhea and chlamydia.  See a health care provider right away.  Your local health department STD clinic would be a good place for expert, confidential, low cost (perhaps free) care.
