undescended testes

I have just been told my nine year old son has both undescened testes which were noticed by a doc only this week after been in hospital for another reason i was also told it was to late for him as he is so big so he wont be able to have chrildren is this right how come no other doctors or nurses relized this in all the check ups he has had over the years.
