Just kidding, trying to make you laugh when you think of it, when you're sitting on the crackly paper on the exam table, wearing an irritatingly poor-fitting hospital gown.

Don't know what kind of physical you mean.  If it is for participating in sports, they will have you fill out a really long form on family illness history, and your own medical history (illnesses and accidents and operations).  The doc or physician's assistant witll check all your vitals (height, weight, balance, blood pressure, heartbeat, lungs -- the latter two are done by listening to your chest with a stethoscope).  The doc will look into your eyes with a little instrument that has a light on it, and look in your ears with an otiscope.  He or she will probably feel behind your ears and look in your mouth, the classic "say aah" thing with a tongue depressor.  The doc will assess other things about you like the appearance of your skin and your reflexes (hitting the knee with the little hammer).  Maybe the doc will send you to the lab to draw some blood for various blood-chemistry measures, such as your thyroid.  If the doctor sees something that he thinks is an indicator of a problem, he or she will pursue it (mine recently tested me for cat-scratch disease, for example, because I had some rash-like dots on my side).  Unless you have ordered a more complicated physical, such as the treadmill tests they use to assess heart function or something, that's about it.  (Until you hit 40, when you get a prostate exam too.)
