???? BuSpar and Effexor XR and breastfeeding????

Are Effexor and BuSpar safe with breastfeeding? My doctor is aware that I am breastfeeding. I am just concerned with the safeness of these drugs and my child.  Any information would be helpful.

Robin,

Buspar and its metabolites have not been studied or quantified in human breast milk and is best discontinued unless clinically necessary while breast feeding.
Effexor and its metabolites also have not been studied in human breast milk.  Once again it should be discontinued unless clinically indicated and then cessation of breast feeding is the safest option.
I suggest that you discuss these issues further with your physician so you can weigh the risks and benefits together.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
