I have so many questions.  My husband and I are trying to have a baby and I am concerned how likely they will get his mental illness.  He has been in and out of hospitals, on and off medications his whole life.  He has told me so many different types of illness he has I don't know which he actually has, maybe all of them.  He is very moody and has an addictive personality.  He has a drinking problem and I think that is why the medications he is taking no longer work for him.  He has seizures when he gets really stressed out.  He is taking Depacote for seizures, Lipitor for high cholesterol, Clindium for bowell, Busbar for a mood stablizer.  Now the doctor put him on Rispido, which has affected our ability to have a baby.  He has a 9 year old son who has ADD and is taking Ritilin.  I just have so many questions and concerns I don't know where to start.  Do you have any suggestions or comments?  Thank you for your time.

Lisa,
I can understand your concern and frustration about the situation you and your husband are in. It is difficult to determine his diagnosis from the information you provided. It may be helpful to discuss your concerns with your husband's physician/psychiatrist for further clarification. The chances of a child inheriting a psychiatric disorder from one parent are about 5-10% for bipolar disorder, 12% for schizophrenia, and 5-20% for major depressive disorder.
This response is for general information only. Always contact your physician for any health concerns.
