Bipolar/Hypothyroidism/Deppresion

I have had to light-moderate bouts with deppresion in the last year, I saw my Doctor, and he thought that I might have had a slight hypomanic episode as well as the 2 deppresions. I have read a lot on Bi-polar and find that I have alot of the symptoms of depresion, some of the manic ( but very suttle, never effecting my work or home life ).
I had read that sometimes people can be mis-diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. I asked to have some blood work done TSH,T4,T3.
If it is Hypothyroidism can your levels of TSH,T4,T3 be abnormal some of the times or will they be off all the time.
The immplications of my condition has alot of importance with my work, I can't do what I do for a living if I'm Bi-polar, so I want to make sure I'm properly diagnosed first or it's the end of my carrer as I know it.
What questions should I ask to my Doctor's to make sure no stone's are unturned.

Dear Murray,

There are a variety of medical illnesses that may present in a clinical picture similar to depression or mania.

These illnesses range from hormonal imbalances to substance induced disorders.  There are also a variety of systemic (multi system disorders) that present in a clinical picture of mood disorder.

You are taking the proper steps of a complete physical exam inorder to rule out a medical condition that may attribute to your mood disorder. If you are not comfortable with the initial evaluation, you may consider a second opinion.

It is important to know there are a large number of people who are diagnosed with bipolar that lead healthy and productive lives.

Best Wishes,

HFHS M.D.-SW
