I was recently diagnosed with systemic lupus erythomytosus. Years ago, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I know that lupus can cause mental disorders. Can lupus cause bipolar disorder? How can I tell if the lupus caused my bipolar disorder?

Dear Ofelia,
This is a difficult question to answer.  As you mention Systemic Lupus
may cause mental disorders.  SLE may affect multiple organs and cause
multiple
symptoms. It mayaffect the thyroid by decreasing or increasing its' activity. This is associated with depressive and manic syndromes respectively. Medications used treat SLE, particularly steroids may also
cause depression or mania. Careful followup by youur physician and a
psychiatrist is recommended.
This reply is provided as general information only. Always contact your
physician.
Sincerely,
