Could My Ex-Girlfriend Have Borderline Personality Disorder?

by bob, Mar 10, 2000 12:00AM
I recently ended a relationship with a woman I now suspect has borderline personality disorder.  From the very beginning, she was given to very quick mood swings and to either worshipping me or being angry with me. After I talked to her about how disproportionate and damaging her anger was, she evolved into a pattern of just shutting down emotionally on me, sometimes for days or weeks.  She also saw all issues, in the world in addition to in our personal lives, as black or white (another symptom, I've learned).  However, she's not suicidal, not self-mutilating, did not try to stop me from breaking up with her and puts on this front of being very together, in fact of being arrogant.  Could she have borderline personality disorder, or do you think it's more likely that she's just insecure and carrying a lot of baggage.  For those that have her symptoms (mood changes, inappropriate anger, pouting for weeks, not seeing things for what they really are), is Prozac effective?

Without thoroughly evaluating your ex-girlfriend, it would be impossible for me to make a diagnosis, or provide answers to your questions. However, you may find it helpful to search through our forum archives, for more information on borderline personality disorder.

If you broke up with her, why are you concerned about her mental status? You mentioned she seems together. Maybe you caused some of the problems that made her moods swing.

I must second Barbara's opinion.  I get the feeling you were playing mind games on this person and were probably being almost passive aggressive.  She may have had mixed feelings about you because she liked you a great deal for some things you had done, but hated you for the fact that you were messing with her emotions by alternating kindness with cruelty.

It is very likely... I did dated a girl for one year and another year on and off but It is nothing but heart breaks with people who have this condition.  It is something that suck you in it with her and changes you as well.  You absolutley did the right thing and you saved yourself from lots of headache and dehumilation for months or years.  She cheated on me and then keep coming back to me and I kept forgiving her.  When she was in love and wanted me, it was like no other girls, very strong feelings but when she shut off.. she realy turned off like a switch.. She kept telling me that this how she is and she would never change.  In one hand, i feel sorry for her but on the other hand I felt more sorry for myself.  She blamed me for everything that went wrong in her life and she took credit on everything that went well in my life.  She went to the extreme to put a restraining order on me with the help of the same guy that she cheated on me.  She also cheated on that guy with some other guys but she brained washed this guy to possibly beat me up and ruine my life and my profession.  Again, you did the right thing and this is the most and smartest decision that you are ever going to make in you life. Eventhough she shows that she doesn't care about the break ups but in a few weeks or months she will runing after you.  But you already know that she has an issue and whats the point of wasting your time with person like that.. Again, I feel sorry for people with this condtion but if you are too sensitive about life then you have no business with these type of people with borderline personality.. Take care! Celeberate man...
