Liver Failure § Schizophrenia?

by Noname, Jan 09, 2001 12:00AM
My 20 y/o son was diagnosed with schizophrenia about a year ago. He has auditor hallicunations and severe paranoia which induces panic attacks.

Can't tell which came first - chicken or the egg - addiction or schizophrenia - but, he drinks alot (no drugs).  Two to three bottles of wine or champagne a day.  My question is:  Would liver failure cause schizophrenic symptoms?
Thanks.

no, liver failure does not cause schizophrenia, but drinking certainly makes the symptoms worse and the capacity to fight off the disturbing paranoia much harder.

You probably know that already..but if you can, see what you or his doctor can do about the drinking. Obviously a good rehabilitation program that deals with both the schizophrenia and the drinking would be the ideal treatment environment.
