Paroxetine-induced Serotonin Syndrome

After taking Paxil (at 10mg per day for one wk) I developed symptoms of serotonin toxicity (mydriasis (markedly dilated pupils), anisocoria (uneven pupil size), hallucinations, hyperthermia, agitation, myoclonus, etc). I am looking for case study information about the duration of symptomes. My symptoms have gradually decreased over a period of two weeks (i.e., I am still experiencing periods of hypomania, iritability, tremor, and dry mouth). So far all I have been able to gather is vague information (33% of patients experience symptom resolution in greater than 24 hours). On this message board under this topic, "Lee" posted a a story similar to mine, I would like to hear the details of that case and that of Lee's brother, and any other patient reports. Thanks.

This is such a rare phenomenon, its hard to say what the average time of symptom reduction is...but since it is getting better,all you can do is wait it out anyway.

I am on 20 mg of Paxil now for 2 months. I can't stop chatting. I am too high strung and hyper. I can't slow down and relax. this is nuts. Are nuts this? I am crazy.

Thankyou for replying...there is no way to tell how common a reaction like your's is because there is not yet enough research on this new drug (so your information is very important!). It sounds to me like you might be experiencing symptoms of hypomania (an abnormal elevation in mood that is not as severe as mania, that is accompanied by forced speach (talkativeness), irritability, aggitation (a feeling like you have to keep moving)). You should tell you doctor what you are experiencing...have you looked in the mirror to check for any autonomic dysfunction (are your pupils slow to react to light?, are they larger than they should be given the lighting?, do they change size when the lighting has stayed the same? Are they of equal size?) also you could check you temperature to see if you have a fever when your are experiencing your symptoms. Thanks for writing.
