Possible weird side effect of Zoloft??

by al, Mar 24, 2000 12:00AM
I have been taking 25 mg/day of Zoloft for 3 months. I am in the process of getting off of it (25 mg/every other day) due to being tired of the side effects, mine are forgetfulness, sexual dysfunction, sensitivity to loud noises, diahreea. The diahreea has been particularly bad lately, and last night was the worst. While I was sleeping, I had an accident, and when I woke up I was covered in diahreea. I am a healthy 33-year-old woman. Could this be an effect of Zoloft, or getting off of it?

I know I should discuss this with my MD, but it's pretty embarassing!

Al,

Gastrointestinal distress is the most common side effect with Zoloft and the other SSRI's.  It typically is experienced for a few days upon initiation of the medication and can sometimes be persistent.  I think it is important to discuss this with your physician who may recommend that you discontinue the Zoloft now.  If the diarrhea doesn't resolve in a few days after cessation then another cause such as infectious diarrhea or diet related etiologies should be considered.  Good luck.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
