Scared?

this is an entirely private site- correct?  noone can find out who i am or anything?

by Roger Gould, M.D., Jan 20, 2006 12:00AM
That is almost true...in cases of emergency, the administrators and founders have been able, at times, to find people who needed help.  Except for that, this is totally private.

Thanks.  My doctor's appt. today was disastrous at best.  They won't prescribe oxycontin because it is a "level 2" medication that is strictly enforced by the FDA.  I guess they have had problems with prescribing it and people selling it on the streets.  So, no luck for me.  I lost it today.  I said to the doctor - "what do you want me to do about this pain."  You are the doctor - I am the patient.  I can't do this anymore.  It has been three years.  And, the norco is not working anymore.  I feel like I am in this alone with no doctors to help because of the damn FDA.  I am not one to get overwhelmed, but I am now.  Just can't see going on and on and on and on with this pain.  It is impossible.

Oh well, thanks for your response again.  Much appreciated.  Bad, bad day.  Think I will go to bed. I hope all is okay with you.  Tell me a bit about yourself sometime.

PS - the res doctor hasn't replied yet - hopefully he will be able to suggest pain relief methods when he answers.

There's also  other type of therapy possibly?  Maybe acupuncture or water therapy (floating type of thing?)  Physiotherapy?  Things that differ from meds or supplements.  With or without meds or supplements.   Maybe someone reading this might also be able to suggest something.

Laneybuns, I hope you're feeling a bit better today.

'Who Is This' has some very valid points re liver testing (hopefully your doctor does that?)

and about withdrawal under hospital supervision

both of which are important things to remember.

I did get to sleep eventually lol.

More importantly - I hope YOU got some restful sleep :-)

Just a comment or two.

You are on a tremendous amount of Norco.  It contains Acetamenopen, which in those doses can cause irreversible liver failure.  Hopefully, if you are being monitored by a doctor your liver enzymes are being watched closely.  You must not drink any alcohol while taking so much acetamenophen as this can exacerbate liver failure.

You can not detox from this much Norco on your own.  This would have to take place in the hospital setting due to the danger of seizures or death.  I hope you aren't trying this on your own.

I don't have any good suggestions for you, unfortunately.  Just wanted to make those two comments.  If you aren't satisfied with one doctor, find another.  I can't blame your doctor really for the hesitancy to use Oxy's.  The fact that you are taking 30-40 Norco's a day indicates you are using excessively. Not through any "fault" of your own--your body becomes habituated to its effects and you need more and more to get any pain relief.  But you ARE using excessively.  If they switch you to Oxy's, the same thing will inevitably happen and then you WILL be in a world of hurt when they cut it off.

I feel for you, and hope you find some relief soon.  Perhaps those links supplied will lead you in the direction of an answer.  Be sure your liver enzymes are being checked regularly.

If you currently have an addiction to Vicodin, then I can guarentee no doctor in their right mind will prescribe oxycontin to you.  It is highly addictive often within the first few doses.  Have you looked into a pain clinic or physical therapy?  Often time physical therapy with whirlpool helps to loosen and strengthen muscles.  At first it seem unbearable but within a few visits you will feel like a new person. Good luck!!

One more comment on my situation as I don't want to "hog" the site at all.  But, I had a big development yesterday.  I went to see my surgeon with my MRI results.  My L1-L4 discs are completely herniated.  (I have already had L5-S1 fused 3 years ago).  And, I now have the beginning of scoliosis.  So, my 8th back surgery in 3 years is on Feb. 20 and it is a brutal one.  Complete lumbar fusion - 4 discs - as well as straightening my spine.  I truly trust my doctor as he is the Chief of Orthoepedic Surgery at the best hospital in Houston's medical center.

However, not only am I worried about the norco but I am very sad about the 4 to 5 hour surgery and 5 day hospital stay with a 6 month recovery of the above surgery.  Sometimes I just feel lost and helpless.  And, I am not a helpless person but like to be in control.

The surgeon also told me to gain weight (I am 5'7" and now about 115 pounds) so that the large amount of cages, rods etc. in my back doesn't bother me so much.  In other words, get some fat to cushion.  This is not easy for me either as I have always been very thin.

Thanks to all for listening again.  It is so nice to be able to get it all out sometimes.
