Self-mutilation and another question

I have two questions:
1) Is making yourself throw up considered a form of self-mutilation? One of my friends insists that it is and that I should count it if a doctor asks if I've ever done anything self-destructive.
2) If I think there's something seriously wrong with me (which I do), should I see a psychiatrist first so they can make a diagnosis (if there is one) sooner or should I see a psychologist and let them decide if I need to see a psychiatrist?

Just me,
Making yourself throw up can be self destructive and may be an indicator of an eating disorder.  Its not necessarily considered self mutilation but can lead to severe medical problems.
I strongly recommend that you have a psychiatric evaluation by either psychiatrist or a psychologist.  If medications are indicated, then only a psychiatrist can prescribe them for you.  The information in this forum is intended for general educational purposes only.  Specific questions about your condition should be directed to your personal physician.  If you would like to see a HF psychiatrist/psychologist call 313 874 6677.
Sincerely,
HFHS MD-JM
