Tinnitus

I hear alot about how people get Tinnitus.  But I was wondering is Tinnitus responsible for other medical problems? Say, if a person has Tinnitus may that Tinnitus result in that persons anxiety, stress, depression, etc,.  If the Tinnitus is relieved may these other problems also go away.   A case in point.  I have had Tinnitus for 11 years.  I also suffer from anxiety, depression, etc,.  One day for no reason at all the Tinnitus stopped for about 3 hours.  I have never had a peace and calm like that in 11 years.  It seems to be that the Tinnitus is causing my anxiety and depression.  Am I thinking on the right track?  What do you say Doc?

Dan,

Tinnitus can be a very distressing condition that can result in depression and anxiety.  Tinnitus is not known to cause other medical problems.  It certainly sounds like there is a correlation with your tinnitus and anxiety/depression.  Treating the anxiety and depression associated with tinnitus is no different than any other situation.  Medications, education and psychotherapy can be helpful.  Good luck.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
