WHY DO I HAVE 11 MONTHS OF CHRONIC NAUSEA AFTER COMING OFF PSYCH MEDS?

by LJOM, Dec 29, 1999 12:00AM
DR.I am 47 years old.I was taken off of thorazine 11 months ago after being on it a year.I was on 50 mg.I was then placed on serequel 50 mg,celexa 10 mg, and small dose of klonopin.I was on these three meds for a short time along with thorazine(chlorpromazine). As soon as I was taken off chlorpromazine, but remained on the other three meds,I became tingly on my entire left side from head to toe. I went to ER and was told it would go away.It went away 4 days later. Then I started withdrawl symptoms and extreme agitatin in stomach.I was very nausiated.11 months later I still remain nausiated, sometimes very extreme.Upper GI,Endoscopy,Ultra sound, liver tests,h-pylori test, thyrois(TSH) all negative.
Someone told me that my nerves leading to stomach may be overstimulated and also could cause excess acids since I no longer can drink tea, coffee, cola, mint tea.etc. Can you pleas help.I am tired of 11 months of constant nausea. Can anyone shed light on this ...LJOM

LJOM,

It must be difficult dealing with the chronic nausea that you describe. It is unclear what symptoms and diagnosis you had that required treatment with Thorazine, Seroquel, Celexa, and Klonopin. Thorazine (Chlorpromazine) is an antipsychotic medication that is used to treat psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. It is also sometimes used to control nausea and vomiting. Abrupt discontinuation of high doses of Thorazine may cause nausea, vomiting, dizzinesss, and shakiness, but it would be extremely unusual for these to persist for months.

I urge you to discuss your concerns further with your treating physician.
