Zoloft effects

by Andreas, Jan 25, 2000 12:00AM
Hi

I have just been prescribed zoloft ( 25 mg/day first week then 50 mg/day) for anxiety and have some questions.
How long does it usually takes before it starts working ?
I've read that a side-effect can be sexual dysfunction, what kind of sexual dysfunction and is it related to how big the daily dose is ?
Are there any withdrawal effects ?

Thanks for your time

Dear Andreas,

Zoloft is an antidepressant which may be used for depression and anxiety.

The average dose is 75mg a day, it takes about four to six weeks for full benefits. Some may respond at lower dosage, some may respond after longer periods.

The sexual side effects vary, they may be, prolonged erection, decrease sexual desire, or weak erection.

Withdrawl symptoms also vary in intensity and type. Symptoms may be insomnia, sedation, sweatimg, anxiety and others.  It is advised to taper off the medication, when stopping treatment.

It is best to direct your concerns to your physician or psychiatrist.

Best Wishes,

I had really good luck with Zoloft.  It took a couple weeks to get through the minor side effects (for me it was light headedness and gastrointestinal trouble)but the anti-depresant effect was well worth it!  I am very sensitive to meidcations and I really didn't have any problems with Zoloft.  I started to feel a difference in about 3 - 4 weeks and full effectiveness by about 6 weeks.  I didn't have any sexual side effects and coming off it was not a problem for me.  Everyone is different and reacts differently to meds.  Try not to think about it too much and just see what happens.  Good luck.
