medical problems causing panic symptoms

i have been having strokelike attacks for 9 years with no diagnoses. the doctors have said that i have panic disorder and the symptoms are panic so after 9 yrs i let them give me xanax. they have helped some but i still have all the panic symptoms even with the meds and i,m left with neurologic type smptoms for the rest of the day. hunger usally starts this all off for me.i,ve had these so bad that i,ve been paralised. all of this has cause some damage to my eye and i have muscle weakness and nerve(emg). i do not believe i have panic disorder but i needed help with this . when i have these attacks i take the xanax until it make me so sleepy i don,t have to deal with the attacks but when i wake up i still feel like i had a stroke. i also have a sleep disorder, i wake up 200 times in 2 hrs.from not getting enoungh air. i have troulbe breathing all day. i am scared i will over medicate myself. is there other things that can cause panic like attacks? i feel really helpless in this because the only person who believes i have a medical problem is my husband and the great phychiatrist i recently have seen. any ideas or thoughts?

Joan, the only idea I have is to explore the possibility of seizures. This requires a work up by a neurologist.

Another hopeful avenue is to continue to explore the role of stress with the great psychiatrist you have. It is amazing how stress effects the mind and makes whatever is going on much worse or more intense. You might start this by using the MasteringStress program(link above), list and work on your stressors and triggers, and then take the printout from the program to your therapy session.

If you try this approach, please be sure to let me know how it works out for you.
