memory

I am a 65 year old female in good health.  Lately I have been experiencing forgetfulness, so much so that my husband has expressed some concern.

A physician I worked for, took the prescription drug, Hydergine, specifically to improve his memory.  He also prescribed Hydergine to his wife as well as many of his patients.

Is Hydergine still available by prescription?

Are you aware of any clinical studies regarding Hydergine and its effects on memory?

Are there any other treatment options available for memory loss?

Lori,

Hydergine(ergoloid mesylate) is a medication that has been indicated for use in dementia.  Its mechanism of action has not been established and there is no real good evidence of its efficacy.  I am not sure if its still available but it is not commonly prescribed for the above reasons.  Other medications such as Aricept and Cognex have been used more recently with better evidence of efficacy.  If you are concerned about your memory then you should have a formal evaluation to quantify/qualify it.  Please see your personal physician who may decide to refer you for neuropsychiatric testing.  Hope this was helpful.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
