what are panic attacks, how do you know if you are having them and is there a treatment

You won't have any trouble knowing you are having panic attacks if you have one.  The symptoms fit the name very well. You will feel so afraid that whatever worst fear you felt before will seem trivial. Most people have sudden onsets, preceded by odd or weird body sensations. The fear is intense. Your body responds with an extreme flight or fight reaction..heart pounding, sweating, high blood pressure, tight chest etc.  You are responding as if you just met a lion while alone in the middle of a dark jungle.

Yes it is treatable both with medication and psychotherapy.

Hope you are not having a panic attack...maybe you are just being a bit anxious or worried about something...some problem in living that is creating some stress.
