Bee,

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depression, is a mood disorder characterized by moodswings.  These moodswings are abnormally high and low which cause significant impairment in ones ability to function.  Behavior during a manic or depressive episode is distinctly different from ones usual behavior.  This is a very basic description of this disorder which affects 1% of the population.  I suggest that you search this forums archives using bipolar disorder as a keyword.  I answered a similar question on monday April 17, 2000.  An additional source of information on this topic is the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association(NDMDA) at www.ndma.org.  I hope this was helpful.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
