Hi, I'm taking methadone as a breakthrough med for CRPS

I don't really have a question.  I am taking methadone for pain from complex regional pain syndrome.  I take Fentanyl patchee plus Methadone and Dilaudid for breakthrough pain.  I have been taking Methadone for about three years now and I have noticed that it does help to stabilize my pain.  I have to take the liquid form because pills make me nauseated.  They make a "great tasting" cherry flavored methadone, yummy yuck.  Now my husband combines it with my liquied Diluadid and it isn't so bad to get down.

Before I took Methadone and Dilaudid I was taking a single breakthrough med that wasn't nearly as strong.  This was before I started going to my current pain management doctor.  I had a lot of problems with withdrwal symptoms and pain control.  The Fentanyl patch never lasted the whole 72 hours and the breakthrough med only worked for six months for helping breakthrough pain as well as preventing withdrawal symptoms.

After that, I would frequently have withdrawal symptoms and flare ups of uncontrolled pain.

Methadone has been a blessing.

I've heard it is living h to get off of but I have a terminal illness so I am not planning on ever stopping my pain meds.

My doctor told me that some of his patients have received further relief by keeping the Methadone in their mouth and letting it dissolve before swallowing it.  For some reason, I am not able to keep the liquid in my mouth until it dissolves.  It seems like a long time and I end up swallowing.

A few years ago, I was having problems and my doctor suggested that I try taking Methadone subcutaneously.  The first three times it felt really good (this is before I had the cherry flavor) but my body soon adapted to delivery method and also I gained weight and I think the Methadone ended being stored in fat so I really ended up not being able to tell any difference.

It stings quite a bit if you insert it subcutaneously  with a small needle  I decided since there was no added pain relief that it wasn't worth the discomfort of injecting it.

It doesn't have any side effects for me anymore.  It doesn't make me drowsy or confused.
