The reason why your doctors are not allowing you to take Imitrex could be, that Imitrex is contra-indicated in Basilar Migraine. Some physicians do use it and some studies have shown that Imitrex is safe in basilar migraine.
The symptoms you have described point more towards basilar (vestibular) migraine. You may get a temporary double vision and disturbance in consciousness.
Till you get the diagnosis and treatment plan from your doctors, you can do some things on your own. Have a regular sleep pattern, stay physically fit, avoid too many chocolates and have faith in your ability to overcome this problem.
