? when migraine meds don't work

by octoberblue, Oct 18, 2007 10:09PM
I have a severe headache probably every three months or so.  I have my normal headaches that I don't notice as much anymore b/c  I am used to it.
I am 41 yrs old now.  The last time I broke down and went to see my dr., which I hate to do b/c they hurt so bad I don't want to go anywhere.  She wanted me to try Imitrex and I told her I had tried migraine medicine before and I didn't think I had a good reaction to them.  My chest was very heavy, constricted feeling and I could not wait until it was out of my system.
She said she wanted to give it a "good try" this time, and gave me a sample.  The dose I think was 100mg.  She said it was double the normal lowest dose.  I took it even though I KNEW I wasn't imagining the reaction I had to it (and to get it over with so maybe she'd believe me?)and in about 30 minutes I had the heaviness in the chest, shortness of breath and this time my throat felt as if it was constricting and it was hard for me to talk.  I took some benadryl and waited miserably for the feeling to pass.  I had that headache for about four more days, and I did not return to my doctor but called and a doctor on call rx'd me Midrin.  This did not do anything for my pain either.  But I took it anyway, to give it a GOOD TRY.  It did not give me horrible side effects though and my headache still lasted the usual time and I just suffered through it.
This morning I woke up with one of these headaches.  I didn't go to sleep with one though.  It's gotten worse throughout the day.  I won't take ibuprofen anymore b/c I've torn up my stomach from taking it so long.  I have taken tylenol today, and drank so caffeine.
I have had MRI's,b/c I had viral meningitis twice and they were fine.  That was a few years back  and the only thing my doctors think I have long term from those bouts is some hearing loss.   The headaches I have feel like a lot of pressure, some scalp tenderness in a few areas where the head hurts.  It's always a little different everytime I get one.  IT's so painful I can't fall asleep and noise hurts.  Light begins to hurt after I've had it for about a day.  When I first got them I thought I was having another meningitis headache b/c it's how they feel to me.   No one seems to believe me when I say that, but I have gotten used to the pain or at least know that I won't die from it.  I am just tired of suffering every few months and they mess me up for about 4 or 5 days.  They hurt so bad that I feel like I am going to lose my mind, and after it's over I can't remember what I did the day before.  IT's like it hurts so bad I am just delirious.
I do notice I have these headaches more frequently since I've moved from CA to AR.
Does anyone have any advice on what I can do for relief?  Do I ask my doctor for a shot?  I remember getting shots a few times and going home and being able to at least sleep for awhile.

Have you been tested for nasal allergies? It is worth looking into since the frequency of headaches changed with a change in location.

I recommend visiting a headache clinic, such as the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago (Illinois).
