I wanted to update this in case someone reads it in the future. My daughter saw a neuro and after a normal MRI was diagnosed with status migrainosus with aura. We think a blow to the head with a volleyball might have triggered it. The migraines have been one right after the other for 10 days, and the vision disturbances have been regular. Doc said this is not common but can happen when the nerve pathways are irritated. He won't give migraine meds or steroids for a 14 year old so we are to try natural methods and oxygen to get them to stop. We are just relieved that it's nothing more serious.
Thank you for the response. She was much better Friday and Saturday and seemed to be responding to Excedrin migraine. Today she was on her MacBook for a few house and her headache/vision got worse. Squiggly lines and flashing lights in the peripheral vision. She took a shower and it got better. Out of the past 7 days she has only had 1 day without headache, and the peripheral vision symptoms have waxed and waned. Yesterday hardly noticed it. Sometimes they are worse than others. I think I'm going to take her to a neurologist.
Hi,
How is your daughter? It is good that initial evaluation from both ophthalmologist and pediatrician were okay. Ocular migraines usually cause vision loss or blindness lasting less than an hour, along with or following a migraine headache. While this type of migraine is rare, management is with medications prescribed by doctors. It is best that you discuss the management plan with your doctor. Take care and do keep us posted.
