Allergic Reaction to Verapamil??

by JaclynDT, Oct 06, 2008 11:30AM
Since I have stopped talking Verapamil [last wk] after being rushed to the ER for shortness of breath and chest pain, I am STILL having the discomfort... I have been told that maybe I had an allergic reaction to the medication and if that is the case I am wondering how long the pain may last... and if there is anything I can do to make it subside. It is very bothersome and makes me extremely nervous which makes my anxiety go through the roof. They did take xrays, a cat scan and an EKG at the ER and they said everything was fine so I am hoping that is really true.

ANY thoughts would be sooooooooo appreciated.

Thanks as always.

You know that sounds just like me, but i had to go to the hospital 3 times before they really found out what was wrong with me. The first time i went for shortness of breath and pain on my right side. Then I went again because the pain was getting worst and worse. The second time that i went they said that i had pneumonia in my right lower lung. well they sent me home with antibiotics. well by 8pm that night i had to have a ambulance called because i could not breath, and i had passed out on the floor. Well when they got me to the hosipital they did another ct with dye, and they said that every thing was fine. That i still had pneumonia, and they sent me home again. Well 7am the next morning I recieved a call from the hospital and they told me that i had to come back to the hospital and be admitted that i had 2 blood clots in my lungs. I was admitted for a week. some time if you know there is some thing not right then keep going because it could be some thing that can kill you. they said that i was lunky!!

Hi,

Thanks for writing in again.
Yes most likely you had an allergic reaction to Verapamil because normally it does not cause this type of symptoms.
I would suggest you to learn some self relaxation techniques like breathing exercises, meditation. Warm soak, body massage and meeting friends and family will help you relax.
All your tests are normal so there seems to be no cause of worry. Take care!
