Are my migraines serious??

I have been getting migraines more frequently lately, I get them at least once a week now and they have been starting to last longer and become more severe. I also randomly get vision blackouts that last for a few seconds and then go away. The migraines occur in my left eye and left temple, when I get the migraines and they get severe only one of my eyes dilate and it's the eye where the migraine is occurring and I feel often confused during my migraines. Also I don't know if this is associated with the migraines but I also have really bad memory loss and slurred speech. When I try to close my eyes to go to sleep it gets even worse than the pain when my eyes are open. Is this something serious? Something I should be worried about?? I have no insurance to find out what it is until mid February I'll get insurance again.

This does not sound good. You need medical help with this. It could be that this is migraines you are experiencing and nothing else is wrong but then you still need help to control these migraines sooner rather than later. It could also be something even more serious, like a brain tumor for example.

Can you not get a ct scan at least and maybe pay out of your own pocket? It shouldn't be too expensive. In the end it is your decision. I would go to the ER immediately if it would be me, that's all I can tell you. With these things it is usually better to be safe than sorry.

Either way I wish you the best of luck and hope this turns out to be "nothing serious".

Thank you for your comment and well I have to wait til February cause we won't get our insurance until then. And he doesn't have a job because he's about to be shipped off to basic training in February and that's when our insurance also begins

Hi and welcome to the Migraines & Headaches Community.

Migraines in themselves are not dangerous but if you are experiencing this pain due to an underlying condition that may or may not be dangerous and you won't know that until you see your doctor.

In the meantime, try some of the suggestions on other's threads to see if they help give you any relief. (That will also help you find out if it is migraines or not.)

Keep us posted!!

I've done a lot of the things such as laying down trying to sleep, pain meds, remedies my mom knew about and made me try. And I haven't found anything to help yet. Pain meds do nothing for me and laying down and closing my eyes makes it worse and when I got to sleep I wake up with the same pain. It's driving me crazy. Cause over the past two days I've had a new thing start happening where it feels like I'm about to get a migraine and it turns into a sharp pain like someone's taking a needle straight to the back of my head. It's weird cause normally it's only on my left eye and temple. I'm trying to wait for my insurance but the fact that it is just getting worse is not helping me want to wait.

Ok.

Do you have fevers?
Is the headache worst in the mornings or evenings?
Do you vomit a lot?
Vision loss?
Hearing or seeing like being underwater?
Weakness or sensation loss in an arm, leg or face?
Pain when coughing?

How long time does it take for  the headaches to reach maximum intensity, hours, minutes, seconds or parts of seconds?
Blank
Avatar_f_tn
No fevers
neither it's about the same both morning and night
no vomiting I have been getting nausea lately though
I get vision black outs that last a few seconds and make me super dizzy and confused afterwards
not unless you count when I take off my glasses lol
No sensation loss just memory loss -_-.
I haven't had to cough while I've had them yet so I'll try it and see.
It varies sometimes it takes hours, other times it takes minutes.
Like yesterday I had one and it took hours for it to get really bad intensity, and it didn't stop until now. Now it's just a low pressure type of feeling nothing like what it normally feels like a lot less intense.

Ok.

The red flags you have are the vision loss and the dilated pupil and that your headache sometimes gets worse when you lie down. The other things could very well be caused by migraines.

Have you ever had a ct scan or MRI of the brain?

Is one eye lid hanging too when the pupil is dilated?

I haven't been able to because of no insurance currently.
And no not that I'm aware of I've even tried tension migraine meds and it isn't helping. And I don't like that I often feel confused, I say the wrong words all the time when I mean to say something else, slurred speech, the vision loss, the migraines them selfs and how it went from a once a month thing to 2 week thing, then once a week, and sometimes now I get them twice a week. I'm also on vitamins and herbal medicines to help keep me in a happier mood and to make sure it's not like. Vitamin defficency, or sickle cell anemia. But none of this stuff works. Like all day today I've had a small pressure feeling in the spot where I normally have my migraines and I've taken the tension migraine meds and it hasn't helped not have my vitamins. It's driving me nuts that it's getting worse on a daily basis and I can't stop it, and my memory loss has gotten much worse too. I'll forget sometimes what I did 30 mins ago or how to spell easy simple words that I've always known how to spell and it's driving me crazy that it's all getting worse than what it's all already been.

What medicines and supplements are you taking?
I understand that the symptoms are hard for you.
Sometimes medicine can make it worse also..
The slurred speech and memory loss can happen with a migraine but the vision loss is not really common.

Don't you have the ability to go to the ER, even without insurance? I'm from europe so i am not fully aware of your health care system..

I'm taking just basically a herbal happy medicine for depression cause I've been really down lately due to this crap, I recently just started trying to take the excedrin tension migraine medicine to prove to my mom it's not just a tension migraine and that pain meds don't work for me, vitamin b. and that's it. And I didn't start any of these until the migraines became how they already are to see if they helped before I decided to complain about it and think it's something possibly serious. If I go to the er without health insurance my bill will be huge. Especially if I have to get a ct scan(alone that's like $1,300) an MRI is more expensive than that. So I'm kinda stuck right now with either saying **** it or waiting til we get insurance.:( it ***** cause I know it's something serious I've had migraines before this started happening usually once a month, but these are worse. Literally I'd compare the pain to having my head smashed by an automated garage(which I had happen to be when I was like 9 so I know how painful that is and what it feels like) it's such a bad pressure feeling.

Ok, but now it is just a few more weeks until your insurance kicks in then?
You need a ct scan, mri or a good doctor to rule out the dangerous stuff.
The docs can hopefully give you good meds too. So don't feel hopeless.

Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes!

I just had something new happen today, normally I just get the vision black outs that last only a few seconds but today I had like colorful spots. Idk how else to explain it except for as if you were to look at the sun for a minute and then look away and the colors you see is what I saw. I currently have a migraine right now. When I close my eyes to even blink the pain intensifies. My memory loss has gotten so bad now that me and my husband went to the store he showed me where he put the card. We went in to buy stuff he left the card in the car, I went to go get it and I couldn't remember where he put it or anything and I ended up thinking it was in a completely different spot and I was so convinced of it. We were only in the store for all of 15 mins tops. I talked to his aunt about what's been happening she said I need to go to the er ASAP because she experienced all the same stuff I am now when she was told she had a brain tumor. I don't want to think I have one is there anything else this could be??

Look Kaylee, there is a lot of things this could be, including migraines. But you will never know what it is until you let a doctor examine you. You are putting your health at risk by waiting but you already know that. I just wish there was some way for you to get help sooner.

To be honest, there is a fairly good chance that it is migraine and that it is not considered dangerous. Then you will not die from waiting a month. But there is a small risk that it is something dangerous, a tumor for example, and in that case the most immediate threat to your health is that you can go blind. Later you can also become unconscious and die or get a stroke. But this risk should be very small.

From your symptoms I don't think it is possible to completely rule out the dangerous stuff. That does not mean that it has to be dangerous.

If you borrow money and go to the ER they might say it is nothing dangerous and you end up with a big bill. On the other hand, going blind is quite serious. You must make the decision yourself.

Can you not get a health insurance faster? Isn't it just to call someone and sign up from the next day?

Anyway, if I had to guess I would say you don't have a brain tumor. There are just so many of the signs that you don't have, the vomiting for example. But is it worth the risk to wait? I don't know. I would say no. But maybe you are cooler than me:).

Just go as fast as you can, that's the important stuff..

I agree with Ball. You really just need to get evaluated. The best we can do for you is give guesses....and guessing is not always enough.

That being said, I do know that migraines evolve and change the more you have them. I've been dealing with migraines for more than 15 years and have just in the past month started having the color issue you describe.

The best thing you can do is start a journal. Write down every thing. Time of day, weather, what you ate, the intensity and any and all other symptoms you have. That way when you do go see a doctor you will have all the information they need and you wont have to try to remember it all. (And yes the more migraines I have the worst my memory is and the less migraines the better my memory is. Take care and keep us posted.
