Basilar migraines? I'm wondering

by fugs, Sep 25, 2008 05:45PM
Hi I'm a 49yo female and 7 months ago I woke up with vertigo and lack of coordination, I went to the doctor and was admitted to the hosp because my BP was soaring, and the doctor was afraid I was having a stroke. I had an MRI, EEG and lots of blood work all were normal. A neurologist was assigned and I have been following up with them. I still have vertigo, stagger and can't keep my balance. I have visual aura's, my face goes numb, I have difficulty talking, double and blurred vision and the lights hurt my eyes but I only have a mild headache, I was diagnosed with basilar migraines and was prescribed Topamax, which I took for two weeks and developed severe eye pain, loss of peripheral vision and cloudy/blurred vision. I stopped the medication 3 weeks ago but still have the side effects, along with everything else. I have seen a ophthalmologist, an ear specialist and had a high resolution CT done and everything is ok. I have a very hard time functioning, I work full time and this is really starting to effect my work and I'd like to get it resolved. I feel like my health is deteriorating at a rapid rate and don't know what to do. Any suggestions? Does the diagnosis sound correct? Thanks for any help.

Hi,

Hope you are feeling better.
Basilar migraine is a type of migraine which has aura symptoms arising from the brain stem like vertigo, impaired speech, blurry vision, ringing in the ears, bilateral tingling numbness, and altered level of consciousness. There is no motor weakness in this type of migraine.
Your symptoms do seem to be due to basilar migraine. It is very important to rule out brain tumors, AVM, stroke and seizure disorder. Since these have already been ruled out in your case by MRI, EEG and blood tests, basilar migraine seems to be the likely diagnosis.
I would suggest you to take good care of yourself and seek consultation with a migraine specialist.
