Does this sound like hemiplegic migraine?

Do hemiplegic migraine symptoms become better or is there a lasting weakness or pain?  I am confused because what I have read says that the stroke like symptoms become better.  Whatever kind I have do not respond to imitrex but are better with tegretol.  However, the weakness in my hand is constant.  Is that permanent?  What about the pain in my foot? And the sensation that my foot is frozen? They are not better, no matter what.  Is this temporary or something I will have to deal with from now on?  And does everyone with hemiplegic migraines have nausea and vomiting?  I do not have either.  But the confusion and brain fog are really bad.  Also slurred speech at times.

Sorry so many questions. I am on the wait list for the head pain neuro and can't get in til July.  Don't really want to wait that long to ask these questions.  This is nothing like my typical migraines.

Thank you for responding Dr. Santos.  I am reading a book called "Migraine for Dummies" because I feel like what I thought I knew about migraines before...well, I was mistaken.  I am trying to become more educated on the different types of migraine, as I was just told they were "atypical" at the neuro visit last month.  My old migraines were a pain, literally, but I knew when the aura came that I better start looking for my Imitrex.  And they became non-existent when we added topamax.  However, I have had to stop that because of weight loss. This new stuff is not quite as easy to figure out and I really appreciate you taking the time to try to educate us on this forum.

I am trying to keep a migraine journal and hopefully that will help me recognize the different triggers, etc. because they are not presenting as they once did.  I guess I will have lots of data when I finally get in to see the pain specialist.

Thanks again! :)

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi,
How are you? Hemiplegic migraines may present differently from one person to another. You may experience any of the following : episodes of prolonged aura (up to several days or weeks),  paralysis on one side of the body, impaired consciousness ranging from confusion to profound coma, headache, defective muscle coordination, nausea and/or vomiting and sensitivity to light or sound. If your prescribed medications are not working, inform or call your doctor for proper management. Take care and do keep us posted.
