Frequent migraines....driving me insane!!

by Pretzel0, Aug 16, 2008 12:21AM
Hi, I'm 27 and have suffered from migraines (with aura) since I was a baby and was officially diagnosed with migraines when I was 5 years old.  At first when I was younger my Mom and my doctor worked together and my Mom kept a diary of triggers that caused my migraines (foods that ALWAYS triggers migraines for me and I avoid AT ALL TIMES are onions, garlic, cheese, nuts, dark chocolate, certain spices used for cooking, curry, ice cream and a few more).  I have noticed that eventhough too much caffeine (coffee & cola) can trigger a migraine for me, that I also get migraines if I don't have my morning cup of coffee.  When I was 15, I had the worst time of my life with my migraines (almost a bit like what I'm experiencing now).  I'd have migraines 3 or more times a week back then and my doctor back then said that it could be hormone related.

Well, I know what foods trigger my migraines and I also know that it's hormone related (I have endometriosis as well) but for the past 3 weeks I have had migraines 3-4 times a week and it's draining all of my energy out of my body.  I feel so tired and lethargic all the time and don't feel like I am motivated at work or able to concentrate properly.  I also don't sleep well through the night either and wake up with a headache every morning, only for it to go away about an hour after waking but then return after about 2-3pm in the afternoon each day and then turning into a migraine that doesn't go away, unless I am able to go to bed and fall asleep.

Painkillers doesn't seem to help anymore neither does my prescription medication called Imigran/Imitrex.  I've seen my doctor and he prescribed some different and stronger pain killers for me 2 weeks ago when the migraines first started but those pain killers haven't helped either and I haven't been back to see him yet, though have an appointment to see him this coming week.

I was just wondering whether anyone has experienced the same thing and what else could be triggering or causing my migraines except foods, hormones or stress.  Does anyone think that I should maybe ask my doctor for a referral to a neurologist for further consultation?

Thank you.

Hello Dear,
Your symptoms seem to be due to anxiety  and stress. You should increase your self confidence and avoid events which make you uncomfortable.Meditation will help maintain concentration. Also you can consult a counseller and seek his help. Magnesium supplements work very well in preventing migraine attacks. You can start with these supplements .You can also try biofeedback therapy which has shown good results. These are alternate treatment options for migraine. You should consult a neurologist as pain could  also be due to degenerative spinal changes.
