Headache Upon Climax

by JohnInFla34, Sep 23, 2008 08:35AM
I was involved in a car accident over a month ago. Barring a few scrapes and a stiff neck with
Shoulder pain that has subsided, a third symptom has appeared that has me concerned.

Upon climax, whether masturbating or having sex with my girlfriend, a sudden, and intense headache appears and lingers for several minutes leading to a lessening of the throbbing, and subsiding within a half hour to an hour at best, with occasional mild pain continuing into the next morning. I also notice occasional numbness in the arms at times, but that has occurred on and off for years. Most likely due to a loss of proper blood circulation due to smoking cigarettes, which I know must end soon for various reasons.

Taking Aleve seems to resolve the headache, but it's happened on several occasions since the accident and I'm concerned I may have something more serious than a Coital Headache, which I've researched on these boards. After speaking with my mother who claims she too suffered from this, and it is hereditary, I'm still curious what my options are, given the headaches only began after my accident, never occured prior.

Is having an MRI or CT Scan the only way to diagnose this? I only ask due to changing jobs recently, and without medical insurance, the testing is impossible to pay for pending qualifying for my benefits, yet I shutter to wonder if I'm walking around with a cerebral hemorrhage of some kind that may require diagnosis and treatment.

I do tend to be a tad hypochondriachal at times, but I want to be prudent in place of ignorant and fearful.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Hope you are feeling better.
I can understand your anxiety because of these disturbing headaches. Coital headaches occur due to sudden dilatation of cerebral blood vessels and muscle tension due to exertion during intercourse.
However since in your case they have started recently after the accident it is very important to rule out brain bleed and hemorrhage. Coital cephalgia can sometimes the presenting feature of neurological problems like meningitis, stroke, tumors and aneurysms. Please get a CT scan or an MRI done.
