Headache induced from medicine??

by Mavs3982, Mar 02, 2008 01:28PM

Hello Everyone-

I am hoping that someone can help me out. I have a lot of medication allergies.

A few weeks ago, my doctor prescribed me amoxocillin 875 mgs 2 x's a day for a mild sinus infection. I began taking the medicine on a friday and noticed I was not feeling well after taking it. I thought it was due to the sinus infection. Sat and Sunday went by and by the time Sunday came, I couldnt life my head off the pillow and I had hives. Clearly, this was an allergic reaction to the medication. At this point, my head is pounding, it's pulling in the back, it feels like needles in my head, I feel like I have a vice in the back of my head and a lot of pressure. The good news is I dont have any sinus pressure/ pain int he front but a lot of headache pain the back of my head.

I had told the lady who prescribed this medicine that I'm super sensitive to meds and to give me the lowest dose possible. She didnt do this at all...because I went back and read my Merck Manual (after I took the medicine unfortunately) and found that for mild sinus infection its 250 mg 3xs a day, for moderate its 500 mgs 3 xs a day, and for severe infection its 875 mgs 2 xs a day. I didnt have a severe infection, as she told me it was just mild, so I'm very annoyed I was given such a high dosage. EIther way, I probably would have broken out, but I may not have had such headache pain.

Anyways, I was given prednisone because it helps w/ inflammation and when I had a similar reaction to codeine a few years ago, it helped out. It would help with headahce and the hives. Well, I took the prednsione and this time, it didnt help out. In fact, it's been a month, and I still have a very bad headache. MINd you, I didnt have ANY PROBLEMS AT ALL until I took this stupid medication.

I am beyond frustrated. I take 25 mgs Elavil at night for interstitial cystitis, but I also know its a preventative med for headaches.

I was doing JUST FINE before taking Amoxocillin and now this stupid headache wont go away. I am on a leave from work because of the pain and I just dont know what to do.

IS there anything that can help out with headaches induced by medication?

Do these exercises and the headache will start to ease. Also you will feel generally better very naturally.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute.
Anulom Vilom –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 20 to 30  minutes twice a day(maximum 60 minutes in one day).
Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Kapalbhati -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day.(Max 60 min/day).Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.
