I've never been addicted to pills of any kind but was taking them daily prescribed to me by my doctor. I hope this helps you in some way...
I had an accident just over two years ago that left me with a minor back injury. I had just enough pain to take a little Ibuprofen every day. After a few months I started getting migraines again (hadn't had one in over 3 years) and the back pain got worse. The doctor increased my daily dose of Ibuprofen... The headaches kept coming, I developed arm and leg pain, and all sorts of other issues. I was having problems with speech, balance, memory, and my back still hurts.
We do blood work and find nothing... The doctor sends me to the Orthopedist and he does MRIs of my back and finds only minor injury that he says I shouldn't even feel.
He sends me to therapy 3 times a week. I learn interesting exercises and am still having all of the headaches and other issues.
Orthopedist finally says I can help you no further and sends me to a Neurologist :)
I love my Neurologist... She Does brain MRI and evoked potential test to rule out MS... No MS :) I give history, she gasps... IBUPROFEN!!! in a migraine sufferer!!!
I had no idea this was a no no. Any over the counter or prescription pain medication taken more than 3 times a week in a migraine sufferer can cause for the brain to kind of go hay wire, the nerve endings all over the body can over sensitize and you'll feel more than you should. I was having one giant migraine for over a year all because of Ibuprofen.
I now have to take a daily neurological medication to keep my brain from misbehaving.
My migraines closely mimic MS and if I'm not taking this medication you would seriously think I had some serious disease or were drunk.
Your Neurologist can explain all of this to you :) If you don't have a Neurologist you need to get one. Migraines happen in the brain, why not have a brain specialist working for you???
I'd also recommend talking to your doctor about you feeling the need to take medication when you're not in pain. Over the counter medications are just as harmful as prescription when abused.
Good Luck!!!
