I dont know what it is or what to do

~I'm 16 and I've have many types of headache I'm sure, but this is something new.  When I was a child I had headaches a couple times every week, at 12 I had migraines at least 2 each month that could only be cured by vomiting or falling asleep with ice packs. I currently still get migraines but maybe only every other or every two months, I've had tension and sinus headaches and migraines. When I was 14 I started getting ice picks, and I still get them although they have less of an effect on me now. I've taken Advil and other pain relievers so many times that I'm almost immune to them (including some given to me by doctors.) I also had the shingles when I was 13 but that was stress and I don't feel like I am under any stress as of right now. [((I get migraines from- too much chocolate, not eating, sleep loss, heat or hot weather, stuffy cars or rooms, too much light, over exertion, stress, hit to the head *obviously*, having contacts in for to long, wearing glasses to long))] But I don't get migraines from my menstrual cycle.

~But today, this morning I got a pain in my temple that hurt so horribly, a pain I've never felt before, and now for the last 6 hours I've been getting the same pain frequently.
About every 5-10 minutes I get a pain, which never moves from my right temple and lasts about 10-30 seconds.

~The only way I find I can explain the feeling is describing it by sounds.
-Lets say you have two sounds, both equal in loudness but the pitch is totally different.
-This pain is a very low pitch, a deep kind of hurt, and stays in the same place and returns to the same place.
-While the ice picks I get are high pitch, and they move about the top of my head.

I don't know how else to describe it, but it's very painful, I don't know if I should take it seriously and go to a doctor or hospital, or if I should just rest and let time tell. I also can't find any information on it either.
Please help and respond soon.

Hi,
So sorry to hear that at such a young age you are going through so much. The headaches that you are getting are icepick headaches they have just changed their character. These headaches are very common in migraineurs. Indomethacin (NSAID) is found to be very effective in preventing icepicks. Please consult your doctor about it. Take care!

Hi there, I hope your pain has subsided. I just wanted to mention to you, if you have a severe migraine lasting more than 72 hours, you may have a status migraine. These types of migraines can be dangerous, and some people are at risk for a stroke when they have one that severe. Talk to your parents about taking you to the ER if the pain continues to be that bad...

Angel, you are so young to be going through this.  It seems that you are handling this very well but don't lose sight of how strong you are.

I'm not a  doctor but what it sounds like to me is a migraine variant.  When you have a migraine for an extended period of time, you can have the constant pain that is in the background, still horrible but then you also get intrevals (sp) of worse waves of pain.  Are you under the care of a neurologist.  Remember, you may have more than one type of headache but you may have only a couple - just lots and lots of triggers.  Talk to your parents about going to the ER when the headaches get that bad.  Do you have insurance.  The visit may need to be authorized by the insurance company but if you tell them you are continuously vomiting as you say above they will approve it because of the dehydration.  My daughter is 15 and she has a very difficult time when them.

Remember, don't use your Migraine as an excuse not to go to school, but don't let any teacher ever penalize you (grades or learning opportunities) because you've missed school.  Good Luck and take care.
