I have pain on left side of my head.

I started having pain Tuesday of last week on the left side of my head about 1 in away from my ear. I went to the Dr on Wed and she said I was just having a headache, gave me meds and said to come back in a month if it continues. It got worse by Friday went back and she said now that it's a migraine that I am having and she can see now some fluids in my ear that she didn't see on Tuesday. She treated it as a migraine giving me Demerol and 2 bags of some fluids. It helped at first but the minute I got into my vehicle the pain continued as it was before. I figure I will just give time for the meds she gave me to work (antibiotics, sudefed and some other type of med). Saturday came around I still got the pain but my balance is horrible. I fell like idk how many times. It's Sunday now and I still got that sharp shooting pain on the left side of my head. Light doesn't affect me, I can still eat and do whatever but the pain wont go away. I just don't know what to do and it's going on 5 days now! Do migraines last this long?! I've had migraines before but not like this and for this long and never in the area that I am having it! Please help!

Hi,
This could be side effect of one of your medicines. What other medicines are you taking? Butorphanol Tartrate Nasal Solution may cause lightheadedness, insomnia, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, stomach upset, loss of appetite, nausea, headache, nasal congestion, nasal irritation, strange taste in the mouth or increased sweating. If it persists, you have this checked by your doctor. Take care and regards.

Hi,

The medicine did help with the headaches but the only thing now that I am feeling are like muscular aches. I'm taking the excedrin tension headache pills (they help with muscular pains). They seem to be helping but for about 5 hours. If it continues through the week then I'm going to go back to the Drs and discuss this issue with them. If it's not one thing it's another..ugh!

Hi,
Thank you for your updates. How is the new medicine so far? With migraines, it is important that you identify the possible triggers so that you can avoid them in the future. There is a Migraine tracker here in Medhelp that may also help. Take care always and hope to hear from you soon.

Hi,
I went to the Dr yesterday. He prescribed me Butorphanol Tartrate Nasal Solution. Told me to use that as well as my regular allergy meds. If my headaches continue to don't hesitate to come back in. He also said that he will discuss with the other 2 Drs that I have seen to start me on some regular medication for migraines. He said I am at that age now where most migraines do begin in young women. So again, will keep you posted.

Hi,
That is great to hear! If you have history of allergies, then your headache could indeed be due to this. Although it is possible that you had  concomitant migraine during this time. Allergic headaches are generalized headache that also presents with nasal congestion or watery eyes. Nasal congestion sometimes lead to congested eardrum as well. This can be triggered by seasonal allergens, such as pollen, molds, but not to food. Antihistamine medication; topical, nasal cortisone related sprays or desensitization injections help relieve the symptoms. Take care always and do keep us posted.

I don't think this was just a migraine. I started using my Flonase daily since last Friday and it seems to be helping. I noticed the pain and pressure I've been feeling is little by little, day by day going away. I watched the news last week and saw how high and bad the pollen is here where I live! I was just in shock and figure it must have affected my allergies badly! Since we have only lived here in this area for 6 months my body is definitely not use to it on top of being 6,000ft above sea level as well! So popping my allergy meds daily, taking my flonase on top of my eye drops as well and I'm feeling way better! But will keep you posted on my updates if any changes. Thanks again for your response and help!

Hi,
It is good that you are feeling better and both the MRI and MRA were normal. Continue with your medications and I agree that if your symptoms persists, see your doctor for a change of medication. You may also need to be referred to an ear doctor if the fluids do not improve. Take care and warm regards.

Just a update:
I went back to the Dr yesterday and had a MRI as well as a MRA done. Good news is they both came back normal. I finished all my antibiotics and still taking meds the Dr has given me. I still have that shooting pain just not as consistent and the pressure seemed to have lessened. If I still have this shooting sharp pain this week I will be making another appt to see my Dr. and see if she can prescribe me something else that is not vicoeden. It doesn't help at all. As for the fluid in my ear, when the Dr checked yesterday she said it was still there but hasn't gotten worse and caught it ahead of time before it could have. Thank you both for helping me with this and giving me a heads up with what I can do or need to do!

Hi,
How are you?  Can you elaborate on the fluids in your ear? Was there an antibiotic given? Migraines may indeed persist for longer periods of time. Rest, ice packs and continue with your medications. If the medicines do not work, you may need to inform your doctor for proper management. A change of medicine or a shift in the dosage may help. Take care and do keep us posted.
