Imitrex not working this time

Hi - I have migraines that last around three days if they're not aborted. I take Imitrex when I get them, and it usually works great, but today I have taken the maximum dose on my Rx for a 24 hr. period (200 mg) and it's still not gone. I am wondering if I went to the ER, is there something else they could do --  could they give me more Imitrex, or another triptan or something else to try to stop it? I don't want opiates. Any thoughts appreciated.

I cut out all artificial sweeteners. Those were my triggers. You MUST try this. I believe that they sensitize and dilate blood vessels to the point of creating instant sensory overload be it from light or sound or movement or just touching my head against a pillow. Things significantly improved but the headaches were still a daily thing. Then I realized that my mouthwash contained a variant of saccharin(worst of all the fake sugars) in it. I stopped using it and all symptoms finally stopped.

I have researched on my own and found that ltyrosine helps me. It creates more dopamine in the brain and eliminates my migraines.  No doctor could figure this out.  They just had me on so many strong meds with side effects. I had to try something on my own.  You can get it on puritans pride website.  http://m.puritan.com/puritans-pride-brand-0102/l-tyrosine-500-mg-000181.  I really hope it helps you like it helped me.  I'm currently trying to get pregnant and there are no studies on effects to the baby. Will keep you posted.  God bless

Hi and welcome to the Migraines & Headaches Community.

No, they are not going to give you more Imitrex, you hit max dose so, that is the max you can have. The last time I went to the ER for a migraine the only thing they gave me was Toradol in my IV and it did absolutely nothing. They let me go a few hours later and gave me an Rx of Tylenol 3 which did nothing.
ERs do not freely give out narcotics because of everyone abusing them so much these days. One bad apple ruins it for everyone and we are the ones that suffer due to other's selfishness.
If you want to take your chances with the Toradol and Tylenol 3 then by all mines, go. One week is to long to have the same migraine. But whether you go to ER or not, you need to make an appt with your PCP to see about changing or adding to your medications.

I assume you are taking the tablet version of Imitrex.  Getting something into the system quickly is key.  My wife uses Maxalt MLT and that seems to help but sometimes the environmental triggers are too overwhelming for the meds to help.
