MIGRAINE WITH VOMITING

by whynot2525, Jan 27, 2009 07:18PM
I get weather induced migraines that always bring on vomiting regardless if I've eaten food or not.  Once the vomiting starts, I am unable to take anything orally - pain meds or even water.  Does anyone know of a patch or cream that can be applied as a pain reliever for the migraine?  Or maybe to at least stop the vomiting?

I have the EXACT same thing. I've tried Imitrex tablets (no help since I threw them up), Imitrex Nasel Spray (once again, no help because I threw it up), Imitrex Injection (have you tried this? I couldn't keep taking because of an allergic reaction). Another good option is Relpax. It is a tablet BUT one of the benifits is that it helps with vomiting also. I did fine on this and I'm a huge vomiter (yuck, lack of a better word). Sure wish I had insurance still...Anyway, I'd seriously think of giving Relpax a shot as I was for sure it wouldn't work and it did wonders.

Hi,

Transdermal patch for migraine is still undergoing clinical trials and it will be some time before one becomes available.

I would suggest you to take your migraine meds as soon as you get the sign of headache or aura and do not wait for the attack to get fully blown to take the migraine med.

Hope this helps!

Verickson, thank-you for the med info.  I never heard of RELPAX, but I'll talk to my doctor.  I too have no health insurance, so choices sometimes are limited.  I buy a couple meds from Canadadrugsonline.com to get a price I can afford.  I looked up both the Imitrex and the Relpax and was horrified they are so expensive even in Canada.  So I know for certain I can't get the here in US. I took Imitrex several years back before I lost my health coverage and seem to remember it did not agree with me, but again, I'll talk with my doctor.

Dr Noopur, thank you too, I am glad to hear a patch is at least in development.  I don't know why one isn't made with just aspirin or NSAID's, etc that can be sold non-prescription.
My migraines always begin while sleeping and I wake up with the pain strong enough that often I can't eat or drink at that point without vomiting.  It will come no matter what so maybe I should just take some pain relief then and hope at least some gets in the bloodstream first. I should probably check the weather forcast daily and start taking meds 3 or 4 days before a change is due.

Thanks again to both of you, this is the first time I have EVER posted a question or comment on any site, so it was a positive experience.

I too get mine while sleeping! I have never had one that came on before I fell asleep. My Dr found this odd and had me do cat scans and all to make sure I didn't have a tumor or anything. I never knew anyone else had this same problem. Wow!
Kinda hard to take the usual advice of "take during the onset of your migraine" when you are unaware you are getting one, huh?
