Migraine or Pituitary cysts?

by teeny0477, Oct 01, 2008 02:23PM
I am a 30 year old woman who is in generally good health. I have suffered with headaches since I was about 7 years old. Around 20 years old I started dealing with normal migraines. September 2, 2008 while I was at work, I had an "episode" that was very unusual. The right side of my face started swelling, and I got a tingling/numb feeling starting in the back of my head on the right side. I then lost all feeling on the right side of my body, the right side of my face drooped, and I could not speak. My blood pressure was 180/100. I work with nurses, and they 911'd  me to the local ER for fear I was having a stroke. The whole 1st episode lasted about an hour and a half. Then I started getting feeling back, could talk, and felt pretty good, minus the massive headache I had. While laying in the hospital bed I had a second episode, all the same symptoms as the first. I had an MRI, and a CT scan done, while revealed no stroke. However, the neurologist told me that my pituitary gland is enlarged and covered in cysts. Can someone give me some insight as to what might be going on? The neurologist said it was a combination of Classic and Complicated Migraines, the whole pituitary gland is what is frightening me. I don't go back to the neurologist for a couple of weeks, so any insight anyone has would help to put my mind at ease.

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
Pituitary cysts are mostly benign lesions which are usually and incidental finding. These cysts are usually asymptomatic. However sometimes these cysts can enlarge and produce symptoms due to compression of neighboring structures like headache and defects in the visual fields. There can be hormonal problems also. If this was the case it would have shown up on the scan.
At the moment it seems to be that your symptoms are due to complicated migraines. Migraines are very difficult to differentiate from stroke because the presenting features are almost similar.
I would suggest you to relax and follow up with your neurologist. Do keep us posted!
