Persistant Optical Migraines in a Teen... Please Help.

Hi. I was wondering... persistant optical migraines are rare, right?
I went to the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago roughly a year ago. They diagnosed me with Persistant Optical Migraines. They said they have seen something "like" it. They always brought apprentices or whatnot, to study me during the appointments. Beta blockers, steroids, russian roulette with pills, they tried everything, but I eventually convinced my parents to give up after realizing the side effects were worse and weren't helping.

Although they have decreased, I have had them 24/7 for 15 months without recession. I was 13 years old at the beginning time. I now see visual snow with slashes but before when they were worse I saw complex patterns of auras. They are transparent with either a white tint or a black tint so I see them not only in the light but in the dark and when I close my eyes. I don't have peripheral vision anymore, grey slashes cover over it. However, I cannot see them outside in the daytime, but they always give off a feeling of something not being right, so I always know they are there. The doctor said it's nearly impossible for someone like me to get this and have this so long, but what are the statistics? I have fully come to realize I may have these for a long time, if not for the rest of my life.

Hi,
How are you? Were you able to have this checked by an opthalmologist to rule out possible eye issues? Ophthalmoplegic migraine is indeed a very rare condition in children. This may present with migrainelike attack, followed within days by periorbital pain which may be caused by cranial neuropathies. There are many variants of migraine and the total statistics for this is around 14% according to literature. There are a lot of factors that should also be considered and needs to be discussed with your attending for further evaluation. Imaging studies like CT scan or MRI are essential.. Take care and regards.
