Polyps in maxillary sinus causing severe migraines

Polyps in maxillary sinus causing severe migraines

For almost 3 years I've been dealing with severe migraines everyday. I'm sixteen years old, I've gotten CT scans, blood tests, etc. They have found polyps in my maxillary sinus that is blocking oxygen from getting to my brain, I'm very sensitive to light, and the migraines occur in the back of my head that lasts for several hours daily. What should I do?

Hi,
How are you? Possible treatments for sinus polyps include medications and surgical means. Nasal sprays that contain corticosteroids  may be used to shrink inflamed tissue.  If the polyps are due to allergic inflammation, physicians could prescribe antihistamines to reduce allergic response. If the polyps are very large, this may require surgical removal. Migraine headaches may have abortive and preventive medications as well. Check with your doctor for proper management. Take care and do keep us posted.

Thank you for your help. I'm currently using nasal drops that I was prescribed by my ENT doctor. I've taken several medications, even before the polyps were there my migraines have always been this way. It runs in our family for some reason but almost every medicine I take have bad side effects on me, irregular heartbeat, nausea, etc. I go back in June to the ENT for more CT scans on my sinuses and some other tests, so I'm hoping everything will end up going well.

Hi,
Are there other possible triggers of your migraine? Aside from being genetic in nature, this type of primary headache is usually exacerbated by some factors such as food, weather, stress, etc. There is a Migraine tracker here in Medhelp that you can use. If it is present everyday with no particular trigger, there are types of headache such as hemicrania continua, a  rare form of chronic headache marked by continuous pain on one side of the face that varies in severity. This responds dramatically with indomethacin. Do keep us posted with your next ENT appointment. Take care always.
